This series of paintings explores the quality of atmosphere in nighttime household spaces. In the dark, all the ordinary objects of one’s house—the shampoo bottles, the candlesticks, the stove with a tea kettle, become transformed into compelling landscapes that take us into a new reality. Imagine going to your bathroom at night with the lights off, or down to the kitchen to get a glass of water. At this time the house is immersed in a dark realm. There is an unspeakable silence which descends, and all of time is at a standstill. Edges are less defined. Tones are muted. Objects are like apparitions. This is the landscape that inspires these paintings. My purpose in creating these works is to elevate everyday objects into something extraordinary. In this way, I encourage viewers to contemplate the subtle mystery that surrounds us at all times.
